Bio-UGS – Biological conversion of carbon dioxide and hydrogen to methane in underground pore storage facilities

As part of the CO2-WIN funding program, greenhouse gas emissions are to be reduced through the use of industrial CO2 and renewable energies in existing natural gas deposits which are to be converted into methane and stored.

MicroPro GmbH is responsible for the microbiological issues in the joint project. This includes an inventory of the organisms already present in the subsurface, the risk assessment of microbial processes and the possibilities of stimulating economic methanation. The aim is to produce an evaluation catalog of the existing German pore storage potential.

The Bio-UGS project (Projektposter) was successfully completed in July 2023. Funding was provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
