Since we isolated bacterial strains that produce hydrogen in 2003, we have been working on the process of dark fermen\u00adtation. Since July 2019, extensive research has been carried out in this area as part of the joint research project \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyperferment.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HyPer\u00adFerment<\/a> \u2014 Micro\u00adbio\u00adlo\u00adgical process develo\u00adpment for hydrogen production and supply\u201d, funded by the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the European Union (ERDF). (<a href=\"https:\/\/micropro.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/pdf\/HyperFerment_Poster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project poster<\/a>) In addition to extensive laboratory tests, plant-side develo\u00adp\u00adments, modeling for possible upscaling and initial conside\u00adra\u00adtions for integrating the process into an existing biogas plant are planned. To this end, a further partner has been acquired as a plant operator. In the follow-up project \u201cHyPerFerment-II\u201d, the process will be econo\u00admically verified in its entirety with the help of a pilot&nbsp;plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an intensive world wide research ongoing to develop processes for biolo\u00adgical hydrogen production. In the analysis of micro\u00adbio\u00adlo\u00adgical processes for biogas production it has been recognized, that it is possible to decouple the hydrogen-producing phase from the methane production spatially and tempo\u00adrally. Therefore, this process can be used as a source for organic hydrogen. Through intensive research the MicroPro GmbH succeeded in isolating and adapting special bacterial cultures that are able to produce a hydrogen-rich gas from biomass. Laboratory results from earlier basic research and laboratory fermen\u00adta\u00adtions show that as a metabolic product of certain bacteria, a gas mixture of H<sub>2<\/sub> and CO<sub>2<\/sub> with 50 \u2014 60&nbsp;% hydrogen content is produced. This mixture can be purified easily by subse\u00adquent CO<sub>2<\/sub>-separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the modular coupling of hydrogen production in a biogas plant (BGP), the following advan\u00adtages are&nbsp;expected:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use of conven\u00adtional BGP-commodity flows,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extension of the range of raw materials for the BGP by pre-fermentation and&nbsp;purification,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reducing the residence time in the BGP by&nbsp;pre-fermentation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lower costs when using bio-waste (urban waste, food waste, etc.) due to the sanitizing effect in the hydrogen fermenter,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>higher energy yield of&nbsp;biomass<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The method is charac\u00adte\u00adrized by a stable hydrogen production with high yield. Furthermore, various technical available raw materials were already tested hedging the supply of the plant. Present laboratory data demons\u00adtrate the economic feasi\u00adbility of hydrogen production in technical dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MicroPro GmbH is confident that the regene\u00adrative hydrogen production from biomass can play an important role especially for decen\u00adtra\u00adlized hydrogen supply.
