In most cases a conta\u00admi\u00adnation of technical systems and under\u00adground storages with micro\u00ador\u00adga\u00adnisms is a risk for safe operation and can quickly lead to technical problems or loss in quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selection of a suitable treatment strategy is often crucial for the further operation of technical systems. The basis for this should be a qualified micro\u00adbio\u00adlo\u00adgical expert\u2019s assessment taking important process parameters into consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Case histories:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Investigation of a biocide for use in injection water<\/h3>
    \n

    Water samples from above-ground facilities for the interim storage of injection water of an oil reservoir were micro\u00adbio\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcally examined to check the effec\u00adti\u00adveness of the biocide used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Enrichment cultures of bacteria of relevant physio\u00adlo\u00adgical groups were treated with different biocide concen\u00adtra\u00adtions under condi\u00adtions close to practice and the bacte\u00adriostasis and bacte\u00adricidy of the formu\u00adlation were deter\u00admined. It was found, that the already used biocide concen\u00adtra\u00adtions only slowed down bacterial growth too insuf\u00adfi\u00adci\u00adently and that clearly higher biocide doses or an alter\u00adnative biocide was required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Apart from this, the commercial rapid-tests used at field station to determine sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) were compared to the laboratory analyses. Here, it had to be deter\u00admined that the rapid tests, after proof of lower, but critical germ content, failed, and only worked from relatively high bacteria popula\u00adtions onwards. Alter\u00adnative test methods were suggested.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Biocide treatment of caverns<\/h3>
    \n

     The operation of numerous caverns has been guided with micro\u00adbio\u00adlo\u00adgical inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtions by MicroPro GmbH for more than 40 years. Several of these caverns indicated an initial micro\u00ador\u00adganism population after solution mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In the early 1970s, the micro\u00ador\u00adganism population of one cavern was exter\u00admi\u00adnated successfully with a self-developed biocide formula. Repeated analyses of the subse\u00adquent years proved effec\u00adti\u00adveness of this treatment. At the end of the 1990s an increase in population with sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) was found again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Based on a recom\u00admen\u00addation of MicroPro GmbH, treatment of the 40.000 m\u00b3 cavern was carried out with a salt water soluble biocide in 1999. The inves\u00adti\u00adga\u00adtions in the subse\u00adquent years, the most recent one in 2010, indicated that the brine has remained free of germs after this treatment and thus confirm the treatment concept in its immediate effect as well as being a form of long term protection.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Biocide treatment of an underground gas storage<\/h3>
    \n

    A population of sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) was proven in the above-ground facilities of a gas storage unit. There was an increased risk of corrosion here through sour-gas formation. The systems were subjected to an annual, prophyl\u00adactic treatment with biocides for this reason. After consulting the customer, 5 biocides available on the market at the time were selected to examine their effec\u00adti\u00adveness compared to the SRB populating the storage unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Bacte\u00adrio\u00adstatic and bacte\u00adri\u00adcidic concen\u00adtra\u00adtions of each of the selected biocides were deter\u00admined with enriched bacterial culture from the system and a corre\u00adsponding recom\u00admen\u00addation for carrying out the disin\u00adfection was provided.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
